Whitaker grew up on the East Coast where water was part of his
childhood and the source of his creative sense of self. The scenes of
water both thrilled him and challenged him. Inspired by the light near
water, the pictorial forms of Nature and the expressive quality of oil
paint itself, Whitaker weaves together the water of oceans, lakes and
rivers into landscapes to form a vision of oneness and poetic connection
between nature and the individual. His subjects emerge out of the light
of nature and the expressiveness of an impasto approach to painting. His
paintings are based on remembrances and the direct study of nature.
